Join ABC economics commentator Alan Kohler and a panel to discuss Australia’s housing mess and ideas for its repair. Alan’s Quarterly essay identifies the start of the 21st century as the time at which house prices got away from the grasp of those who did not already own one. Australian society was altered by the schism between the home owners and the others. Inequality and intergenerational disparities were profoundly changed by the runaway house prices. Alan will tell the story of how we got into this mess – and how we might get out of it.

Alan Kohler is finance presenter on ABC News and a columnist for The New Daily. A former editor of The Age and The Australian Financial Review, he founded the Eureka Report and has written for The Australian, AFR, The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald. His books include It's Your Money.

Prof Ed Blakely

For most his career, Ed was a professor of Urban Planning at the University of California at Berkeley. He is known primarily for having been executive director of Recovery Management for the City of New Orleans post Cyclone Katrina. He has also held the position of Professor of Urban Planning at The University of Sydney, District Commissioner of the Greater Sydney Commission and Acting Commissioner of the NSW Land and Environment Court.
