“The emergence of ‘place-based’ planning as a way of dealing with the complexity of the city”
Place based planning as a term that is being used more and more but in a different way to how we usually understand place planning- it is much more than being sensitive to context, or preparing a thorough site analysis. It is about collaboration, coordination and integration- in other words bringing multiple parties together to work towards a common understanding. The purpose is to optimize and synergise activities that would normally be separate.
Again you might say this is what urban designers have been doing all along. The difference is the scale, and who is involved and it might not involve ‘design’ at all.
Rod Simpson is the former Commissioner, Greater Sydney Commission. He is a Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Design, Architecture & Building at UNSW.
