With very substantial road and rail developments under way in the Sydney metropolitan area over the last few years and continuing for at least a few more, considerable public interest has been aroused by residential, commercial and transport disruption, by questions concerning the compatibility of standard rail and lighter Metro lines, and by the likely effectiveness of the enormous expenditure outlaid. This paper by one of our leading urban experts has the advantage of getting down to tin tacks in respect of one element in the mix.
Renewing the Sydenham to Bankstown corridor will severely test existing planning orthodoxy and practice, which have guided large-scale urban renewal in Sydney so far. A new approach is needed that will benefit both the present residents of the area and those who will arrive there over the next 20 years. A key difference between the planned renewal of the corridor and other major renewal projects to date lies in the corridor being one of the last low-cost housing markets within 20 km of the CBD. Many of the households are renting, one in five are overcrowded, and housing stress is high. The community is decidedly multicultural, with many recent arrival, and the mix of employment, services and facilities meeting its varied needs. Renewal of the corridor will be a challenging task.
